Tennis Match Analytics – Removing “Dead Time” from Broadcasts

We developed an AI-powered video analytics tool that automatically removes inactive moments (“dead time”) from tennis match recordings, keeping only real gameplay. The solution helps coaches, analysts, and players focus on meaningful actions for faster technical evaluations.

Sports Analytics & AI

Deployment

Local and streaming video processing tool

Scope

Tennis match optimization for training and professional analysis

Core KPI

Reduced video length and faster technical review cycles

Overview

Tennis matches contain long stretches with no active play — such as player preparation, replays, or breaks. These “dead times” make performance analysis slow and inefficient for coaches and analysts who need only the action between serve and rally end.

The goal was to build an intelligent pipeline that automatically detects playable segments and generates new, concise videos focused on real points, cutting out all unnecessary downtime.

The Challenge

  • Full match videos include long inactive periods.

  • Manual editing and tagging are time-consuming.

  • Analysts and coaches need continuous gameplay only.

  • System must work with both stored videos and live streams.

Our Solution

We developed a computer vision and video analysis pipeline that:

  • Detects serve gestures and identifies the start of a rally.

  • Determines rally end by analyzing ball dynamics and stoppage.

  • Automatically removes replays and broadcast interruptions.

  • Generates a new edited video containing only real gameplay.

  • Includes a simple GUI for execution, parameter tuning, and preview.

Business Benefits

Technical Highlights

  • Computer vision to identify court, players, and serve patterns.

  • Temporal analysis to detect the rally’s start and end precisely.

  • Heuristic filters to remove replays using overlays and visual cues.

  • Efficient processing for long videos or streams, preserving audio-video sync.
